Shoot Many Robots is a side scrolling shooter that harkens back to the days of Metal Slug and Gun Star Heroes. In this game you will shoot, over and over again, many robots. Going from level to level in your RV and swapping out weapons and power ups to rain death upon the endless hordes of mindless killing machines gets a little mindless. Unless you spend lots of bolts (currency) to customize your weapon load outs and various articles of clothing to fit your play style. You can unlock everything from shotguns to rockets launchers. All the guns come with fun names and humorous descriptions. Also the guns will upgrade to models that will pierce armor or retain better accuracy.
Guns come in two forms in Shoot Many Robots. You have a standard fire arm that you carry through the entirety of the level with out ammo limits. You will also have a stronger weapon with a fixed ammo amount but killing robots will drop replenishment from time to time. So blast away and Shoot Many Robots to keep the fun going.
Destroying robots will drop coupons for new pieces of gear as well as guns. Gear falls under three categories: Hats, backpacks and pants. All this gear will add boosts to damage, ammo, and life replenishment as well as give access to jet packs and extra health power ups. Health comes in the form of beers you swill when you've no doubt been battered senseless by some machine or other. Different gear has different looks and will be detriment to the aesthetic of your character. Want to wear a tutu, a beer helmet and a jet pack? It's there, just keep blasting robots to unlock a massive wardrobe.
This game plays out with two different level variations. One is the standard shooter affair. Run through a multi-tiered level with branching paths until your reach the boss. The other levels are more of an arena combat situation. You are locked into a sizable map with platforms and explosive traps you can use at your leisure. A set amount of waves must be completed to move on to the next stage. After the last wave is done you can compete in bonus waves until those are satisfied or you die. Dying in these bonus stages will not hinder progress through the story arch, they seem to just be there for extra bolt collecting goodness.
The game play in Shoot Many Robots works well enough. Sometimes jumping is a little wonky and aiming is not as fine tuned as you wish it could be at parts. I had fun with my romp through a world gone mad with killer robots. With lots of different robots to shoot and an almost RPG amount of weapons and gear this title can bring lots of fun in small play sessions. Grab a buddy or three for this game, the more players means more carnage. If you like old school shooters or co-op with pals and beers this game is right up your alley.
I give this game a 7 out of 10. You can get this on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Steam.
Happy gaming my friends!
